More than just an iconic skyline, architectural marvel or seaside resort, The Del represents a bygone era, a relaxed SoCal mindset and a timeless elegance. And there’s no better time to frolic on the beach like Marilyn Monroe in Some Like It Hot than during its 130th anniversary in 2018.
This California gem has charmed travelers from around the world since 1888 with its beachfront location, luxury accommodations and elegant soirées. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1977, Hotel del Coronado is an American beauty to treasure. “The Legend Lives On” as the hotel honors this milestone anniversary with a dynamic roster of experiences that solidify its place in history as the place for a Grand American Beach Vacation.
“The property has this tremendous allure and every guest who stays here is part of our heritage,” said General Manager Harold Rapoza, Jr. “For 130 years, we have hosted millions of ‘Del memories’—for Hollywood celebrities and British royalty to generations of families gathering for their iconic beachfront photo with the turret. This anniversary both celebrates the past and looks forward to the next 130 years—the legend lives on.”
Some of The Del’s famous visitors include Charlie Chaplin, who played polo on the grounds, and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnez, who perfected their “I Love Lucy” characters during a lengthy stay. Notable presidential visits include FDR, Ronald Regan, Bill Clinton and both Bushes, to name a few. Edward, Prince of Wales, was fêted at The Del in in April 1920. A large reception and dinner was held in his name and attended by 1,000 guests in the Crown Room. His future wife, Wallis Warfield Spencer Simpson, was living in Coronado at the time‑then married to her first husband. Years later, then King Edward, abdicated the throne in order to marry the American heiress and two-time divorcée.
